Apparently, Hollywood film legend James Dean confided a dark secret to Ms. Taylor many years ago.

When Jimmy was 11 and his mother passed away, he began to be molested by his minister. I think that haunted him the rest of his life. In fact, I know it did. We talked about it a lot. During 'Giant' we'd stay up nights and talk and talk, and that was one of the things he confessed to me.

As I read this, I wasn’t expecting to read the word minister.

My heart sank.

It does every time I hear a story of abuse. And all the more when the abuse is perpetrated by one whom represents God.

Hopelessness and despair. This I understand, when one’s worst problem is entangled with the spirituality that many would consider to be an integral source of comfort and healing.

But I am glad to know that James Dean had a true friend to confide in.

I’m also glad that his friend shared the secret. May we all learn from the pain of others and continue to expose the darkness of pastoral sexual abuse.

And may both Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean rest in peace.
