The Bitter Struggle

“Even engagement in the bitter struggle for survival can be a source of meaning and significance. The pain makes us feel fully alive and fully aware of our dependence on God.” ~ Paul Wong

Reading this quote reminded me of my own spiritual journey, as I struggled to come to terms with the pastoral sexual abuse which nearly destroyed my life.  As I emerged from some very dark years, I knew that I’d received a paradoxical gift; one that led me into a deep and very personal relationship with my Heavenly Father. Through suffering, I learned to recognize His care and guidance when it seemed like the rest of the world had abandoned me.
As I read your survival stories, it’s clear that some of you have experienced this also.
For those of you engaged in the bitter struggle—those who’ve not yet found your way out of the deep valley of sadness and shame; anger, despair, and that cloud of confusion—take heart!  The Lord cares deeply for you. Your pain can be used by Him to create something beautiful inside of you. He alone can redeem the very worst things in life to bring depth and meaning. And this is a great hope for all survivors.
