Clergy Sex Abuse Knows No Bounds

Clergy sexual abuse knows no limits—there’s no country untouched, no denomination spared, and apparently no age group that’s not at risk.

Check out this news clip from Norway where the victim, a 70 year old woman, was allegedly violated by her long trusted Priest:

The victim alleges the misconduct took place at her home one-and-a-half years ago during a visit by the chaplain, whom she had known for 12 years.

She subsequently wrote to him, expressing her deep disappointment at his actions following long-term spiritual guidance.

According to the article, the victim was offered a sum of cash in exchange for her silence, which she declined, opting instead to go to the Police.

In addition to acknowledging a sexual abuse problem within its ranks, a Church spokesman did recognize the complex elements involved with clergy sexual abuse:

“In most cases, there has been a relationship of trust between the perpetrator and the victim. When you have a loyalty to the person concerned, it is often more difficult to tell someone about what has happened." says Else Kari Bjerva, head of personnel at Normisjon.

Both the alleged abuse and apparent monetary cover up are under investigation at this time.

It’s interesting to note that Norway holds clergy sexual abuse to legal/criminal standards. And that the Church appears willing to talk about the investigation.

As for the victim, we applaud her courage and tenacity in this devastating matter. Standing up to a beloved institution is never easy. Though we have no way of knowing how she’s holding up, we’re inspired and wish her healing.
