Church Beware!

A Pastor who commits sexual abuse against one of his congregants doesn’t do so without warning. There are indicators, which alert us that something is “off”. Unfortunately, many who’ve witnessed these early signals often dismiss their instincts due to a disbelief that their Pastor—A Man of God—would participate in such blatant sin.

Those who do confront the abusive situation often find themselves ostracized by a church community in denial of that which they don’t understand, or wish not to see for themselves.

Some may simply not know how to deal with such things, or what to do with their observations.

Perhaps you’ve noticed a change in your own Pastor’s activities:

Has he become withdrawn, possibly avoiding you?  Is he canceling meetings or activities he used to participate in?  Has he become flirtatious or overly attentive to the women in your congregation?  Have his sermon’s changed, possibly including overtly sensual suggestions, or maybe there are private comments he’s made, which make you feel uncomfortable?

Has he resorted to manipulative, controlling behavior; maybe you’ve even caught him in a lie?

Friends, it’s time to take notice.

If your gut instinct is “yes” to the above, then it’s highly likely that something’s amiss.

Nobody wants a potentially faith-shattering disruption in their sacred place of worship, but we have an undeniable responsibility to protect each other. And to face these issues with wisdom, compassion, and the love of Christ—which never allows for exploitation or the abuse of another.
